Exterior House Shutter

Thousand of different decorating ideas are being used all over the world these days. Nevertheless, only a few found a way to the mainstream of the fashion world. House shutters have gained popularity once again as homeowners tend to choose these shutters for an additional elegance and style. An outdoor or exterior house shutter tends to be more attractive than functional.

Garage Workspace Organization

The garage is often a dumping ground for the typical home. It is also the fix-it man or woman's domain. Keeping things organized is essential for the smooth functioning of the weekend warrior's lair.

Workbench

MASONITE

Nothing claims and defines a workspace in the garage like a big old workbench. It is also the perfect place to bolt down those more stationary tools like grinding wheels and buffers.

There are many options for building a bench from a custom wall mounted unit with room underneath to pipe legs and plywood tops. You can also go for a store bought bench - but, where is the fun in that?

Pegboard Tool Rack

No workbench is complete without a nice hunk of pegboard hanging on the wall behind it to sort and organize tools. The classic version is made from masonite board, but it is now possible to choose diamond tread metal versions that are painted or chromed to give your garage a polished look.

To make the peg wall useful, a wide assortment of hooks and hangers are available to fix your tools to the board.

One useful organization tactic is to draw outlines around the tools to give a visual reference for where each tool belongs. One quick glance will let you know what is missing.

Hooks and Hangers

No garage organization is complete without a whole bunch of hooks and hangers. They can be used to hang bicycles from the ceiling and shovels and rakes from the wall. Do not forget to include a row of hooks for coats hats and other outside work clothes.

Tool Boxes

Tool boxes come in a wide variety of configurations. If your work mostly takes place inside the garage (like working on cars or mowers) then a tall shop toolbox with lots of drawers is a good choice. If you mostly find yourself grabbing the toolbox to work in the house, yard, or on the road, there are a number of toolboxes with wheels and handles to help move things around without breaking your back.

You will probably have more than one toolbox - one for each set of tasks.

Cabinets and Shelves

The garage is home to paint cans and many other containers that need a home. There are also lots of odds and ends that do not fit anywhere else. Cabinets and shelves are the answer to effective storage.

You should have at least one metal storage cabinet to hold flammable products like paints and thinners.

Conclusion

Getting your garage organized is a step-by-step process. Pick a zone and get it in shape, and then move to the next. Hooks and hangers are a good place to start, because they help you get things off the floor. Then, work your way up to the bigger projects.

Your garage is a magical place. Preserve and protect the floor in your garage with epoxy garage floor paint.

Water Soluble Oil Paints - Facts, Tips & Why I Use Them

We have all been taught that 'oil and water do not mix'. However, rules are made to be broken in art and water soluble paints are rebels on the scene. But, your intelligent mind is probably still pondering, "How can oil pigments possibly be water soluble?"

masonite doors

The answer is this: The oil vehicle has been modified to make it soluble in water, eliminating the necessity for turpentine or other dangerous solvents to thin paint and clean brushes and other supplies.

MASONITE

There are still some painting purists who question whether or not these pigments are true oils, but I assure you they are. In fact, I have been successfully executing my paintings using water soluble oils with professional results for over 10 years. I made the smooth transition from acrylics to the new oils in my home studio so my family and pets were not exposed to toxic fumes. With an open mind and a little time experimenting, you might also enjoy the benefits of water soluble oils. Below, I will do my best to inform you of this remarkable paint from my own personal experience and with a little help from the technically informative book, "Painting with Water Soluble Oils," by Sean Dye.

Facts:

Water soluble oil offers greater convenience and increased accessibility. Especially to people with allergies, home studios, students, schools and those who have avoided oils because of the toxic solvents. Water soluble oils smell great, just like traditional oils! Linseed oil is contained in both new and traditional oils. Water soluble oils are real oils. They are water mixable, not water-based. The new oils were developed to be used with water in the place of turpentine, mineral spirits or other solvents! The vegetable drying oils have been restructured in water soluble oils which eliminate yellowing. Like traditional oils, water soluble oils must dry through oxidation - absorbing oxygen through the air. Once dry, they are just like any other oil painting and should be treated as such. Like traditional oils, water soluble oil paintings cannot be reactivated with water when dry. New water-mixable mediums have been developed for water soluble oils: quick dry mediums (my favorite), stand oils, painting mediums and impasto mediums, linseed oils and alkyd mediums. Traditional oil paints and mediums can be added to the new oils in small amounts of up to 20%-30% and still retain water solubility. Small amounts of traditional oil color can be added to these new paints affect the color or consistency. The new pigments blend and mix extremely well. When the new oils are mixed with water, it may at times appear somewhat cloudy until the water evaporates. Although I have read this complaint, it has not been my experience with these oils. The fast drying mediums allow for plenty of time for blending but still make over-painting easier and faster. Luminous, transparent glazes can be made by using the water-mixable mediums. Rich, opaque darks are easy to achieve. Water-mixable linseed oil medium makes the new oil more transparent. A loaded brush of traditional oils spreads much farther than a brush loaded with water soluble oils. This does not affect the look of the finished piece, only the actual painting process. Water soluble paints produce fresh, bright, strong color. It is easier to avoid making 'muddy' color. The new oils are easier to clean up. Those with limited or no experience with traditional oils adjust to water soluble oils more quickly. Depending on how thick you paint, the water soluble oils retain their elasticity and workability for up to 48 hours. The new oils lack of the glossy appearance of traditional oils, but a final varnish is a quick way to replicate the luster of traditional oils.
Tips:

Take care when drying your freshly painted new oil or traditional oil paintings. Avoid dark or moist areas to prevent darkening or yellowing that is caused by the linseed oil. Water soluble oil paints are perfect for travel, especially on airplanes. Many airlines restrict traditional and flammable solvents on commercial flights. Eliminating the need for harsh solvents makes water soluble oils easy to pack for painting on location whether by car, plane or horseback. The plein air painter can keep paint on the palette for long periods of time without the paint drying out. However, finished paintings dry more quickly than traditional oil paintings which make these new paints even more desirable for the plein air painter. Last summer, I used water soluble oils during my plein air painting workshop in France. I painted on canvas sheets which made my studies of Provence light and easy to pack for travel.  In the past, I have also used 300lb watercolor paper with two coats of gesso. Acrylic gesso should be used as the starting ground for water soluble paints to ensure proper adhesion. For studio works, I prefer to paint on hardboard or Masonite panels for a smooth and rigid support, but I do use canvas and linen at times. Hog bristles are good for under-paintings, but do not let them sit in water or they become mushy. I often use synthetic bristle brushes for large areas. For fine work synthetic watercolor brushes work well. The new oils will remain water soluble after these specific mediums are used. Having said that, I have found that it is better not to mix water with the medium because using water makes the mediums sticky and the paint does not flow as easily. By the time I begin to add the oil medium, I usually abandon the water except for brush cleaning between color or temperature changes. A few drops of linseed oil on the palette restore the paints to their original workable form. All oil paint should be applied fat over lean to prevent cracking. Use water to thin the new oils for laying in washes. Build up the oily layers after the under painting is dry. The new oils will remain water soluble after the specific water mixable mediums are used.  Just like with standard oils, the new paints can be laid down in many smooth thin layers, called indirect painting or can be applied in a thick wet single layer called direct or alla prima painting or everything else in between. Drying time is longer when a lot of white pigment or Naples Yellow is used. The dark passages in water soluble oils sometimes 'sink' and lack the glossy appearance of a traditional oil painting. This is easily remedied by a final varnish. I prefer Max Artists' Oil Colors by Grumbacher and Artisan Water Mixable Oils by Windsor & Newton. The characteristics of these brands are consistent with their traditional oil color counterparts. They both use all of the traditional pigments in their lines including cadmiums and cobalts. These paints deliver brilliant, luminous transparent glazes and rich, mysterious opaque passages to my work. Holbein's Duo Aqua Oil has a rather firm consistency which makes them ideal for painting with a palette knife straight from the tube. The Van Gosh H2Oils have a softer consistency that is similar to acrylic paint. They are perfect for detail work without the need for adding mediums. However, for palette knife work, impasto medium is recommended. I use non-toxic Turpenoid Natural on hard to clean brushes otherwise; "Dawn" dish soap does the job.  Baby oil is also a good cleaner, followed by soap and water. After, a little petroleum jelly conditions the brushes back to their original shape. Rubbing Alcohol and a razor blade keep my glass palette fresh for the next painting session. Hopefully, you now have a better understanding and appreciation for the benefits of water soluble oils. They are easier and less intimidating to use and deliver the beautiful results of  traditional oils. I encourage you to give them a try and let me know how they work for you.

Maximize Your Storage Space With Pallet Racks And Cantilever Racks

If you or your company uses a warehouse to store products, materials or equipment, you could be wasting a lot of space by storing items on shelves or on the floor. Pallet racks and cantilever racks allow you to take advantage of the empty air available in buildings and truly maximize your storage space.

masonite siding

Most shelving has capacities limited to 800 pounds per shelf, and the standard width for shelves is generally limited to 48 inches. This means you can only store a limited amount of product on your shelves before you turn to storing it on piles on the floor. This method is not only inefficient, it can be dangerous too. No one wants to trip over a pile of dry wall when they're distracted or in a hurry!

MASONITE

Pallet racks are used for storage in many factories and warehouses due to their ability to hold extremely heavy items as well as wider items than shelving can hold. Most pallet racks can go up to 20 feet high and 10 feet wide, so you can store nearly anything. Pallet rack shelving has capacities of up to 24,000 pounds per upright and 6,000 pounds per pair of beams, while structural pallet racks have upright capacity up to 45,000 pounds and beam capacity to 15,000 pounds - that's a lot of storage! When you need high weight capacity and a large opening, pallet racks are clearly the way to go.

Way too often companies put bulk items like dry wall, aluminum sheets, sheet steel, plywood, granite and flake board in piles on the floor, leaving it to the warehouse personnel to constantly sort unrelated heavy and bulky items. Because cantilever racks are designed to store longer or odd shaped materials, they are perfect for organizing warehouses, lumber yards or manufacturing facilities. Some of the many items that can be stored on cantilever racks include: aluminum sheets, piping, plumbing tubing, lumber, plywood, wooden crates, metal crates, sheet metal, dry wall, fabricated long parts, carpeting, flake boards, masonite sheets, marble, granite, and other stone products.

There are simple rules governing how to position the arms on cantilever racks. Rule #1: use the correct amount of arms so that the divided weight does not exceed arm capacity. So for example, a 4,000 pound load of materials would require at least 4 arms with 1000 pound capacity per arm. Or a 2,000 pound load would require at least 4 arms with a 500 pound capacity per arm. Rule #2: the total amount of overhang is equal to (1/#arms) x the length of the material. For example, if you had some 20 foot long plywood on a cantilever rack with 4 arms, the total overhang would equal (1 / 4) x 20 feet = 5 feet. So 2.5 feet can overhang on the left and the right.

Cantilever racks can also go up to 20 feet high, so you can utilize every last inch of space in your building. If you need more storage space in your warehouse, don't build more - install some pallet racks and/or cantilever racks for more efficient storage today!

Exterior Window Shades

Exterior window shades are window treatments that are usually hanged or attached to the exterior of the window. They are usually quite large to cover up multiple windows or at least cover a large area that will serve as protection from the heat of the sun. An external shade or awning can offer shelter for kids to play outdoors. They can be on open air and still be shaded from direct sunlight.

Shades Using Awnings

EXTERIOR DOORS

Awnings are much more effective at keeping heat out of the house than curtains or internal shadings, mainly because they stop rays before they even pass through the window. Studies show that it can be as much as 20 Celsius cooler under one than on the Sun, but it takes no college degree to realize that shade is better to stay in than the raging sun at 1 PM in the middle of the summer.

Shapes, Sizes and Types

Exterior shades come in all shapes and sizes, they can be manually operated or electric motor driven but every one of them serves one purpose; they keep your rooms cooler and indirectly electric bills lower. During the summer you can stay under them during a quick rain.

Manually operated models need to be retracted when winds get too strong, motorized variations may pull the fabric back if they detect that certain circumstances are not in favor of its longevity.

Not all shades are awnings; you can keep it simple and easy. External shades act like one with the only difference that they are parallel to the window they are on. This solution has its benefits over an awning. These advantages include less time spent on maintenance and a more reasonable space consumption.

The window shades are also available in manually operated and motorized variations that mainly differ in their price and the ease with which they can be operated. The motorized shades are usually advised to be installed in hard to get to windows like large windows that are hanged in the second floor. There is nothing more convenient that an exterior window shade that knows when to go up or down, or one that can be controlled from the comfort of your couch.

Materials

Exterior window shades are usually manufactured using strong fabrics that are weather resistant and durable. The old traditional window protections use wood but with new technologies, the most popular material used to manufacture these shades are vinyl. They are durable, easy to maintain and provides great protection from the sun. Sunscreen panels are also quite popular and shades that have multiple layers of fabric as protection.

Exterior Window Shades

In the end, choosing the right exterior window shades for your home is not that difficult. They are almost like the tradition roman shades you normally install inside your home but only bigger and more durable as they are placed outside of your house. It's also advisable to buy hurricane proof shades just in case of any storms that may occur.

Front Door Security Hardware - Make the Burglar Unwelcome

Your front door can create quite an impression. Someone visiting your home has to walk up to it and knock, or give the bell a punch. A tired, weak looking, unwelcoming door perhaps with peeling paint, may give the impression that the home behind the door is not so well looked after. That may not be so, but it is the impression it gives.

exterior doors for sale

Your front door can make an impression upon someone else too. This person will find a tired and weak looking door very welcoming. He will be pleased to note that the door is not that strong, and neither is the frame. He will delight in the lack of front door security hardware. This person is a burglar.

EXTERIOR DOORS

Forcing an exterior door is not the only way burglars break in of course, but a weak door is almost an open invitation.

There would be little point in fitting the very best security hardware to a flimsy front door set in a weak frame. The door and frame both have to be tough enough for the job. All the hardware that you fit needs to be of exterior quality. The front door security hardware will be your locks and hinges, also fitting a peephole door viewer will be a good security measure.

Make the lock a good quality deadbolt mortised into the door. Don't skimp money on the hinges, these too need to be tough quality and fitted correctly with good long screws.

Good locks and hinges, on a tough exterior quality door in a strong frame. Now what impression is that burglar going to get? He is going to get the message that he would have a heck of a tough time busting in your door. He will not feel welcomed at all, and it is quite likely he'll go off in search of another, less secure, door.

Hopefully the burglar will not now be looking at another of your exterior doors such as your patio doors or your garage doors. All of the doors to your home need to be secure enough to keep the burglar out.

The rest of the hardware, the mail flap, house numbers, knocker, etcetera, you can get to match up with your front door security hardware. Brass, antique bronze, brushed or polished copper and many more finishes are available.

Now you have a secure front door that looks welcoming to the visitors that you do want to come calling.

Mission Style Homes and Doors

Mostly located in the Southwest or Florida, Mission homes are based on the architecture of early Hispanic settlers of California, and so look a lot like the Spanish structures of colonial America. With red tile roofs and a lot of arches, these types of houses have patterned tile work typically seen around the windows or on the walls.

wood exterior doors

Mission style homes are built with that extra bit of Southwest flavor, and in fact are also occasionally called Southwestern style. Some homes also resemble early missions, which mean another alternate name for this style of homes is Mission Revival. Finally, this style is also known as Adobe homes, as they are typically made with smooth stucco siding and look made out of that construction technique.

EXTERIOR DOORS

Mission style doorways are typically arched or rounded, while the door s themselves can be square. Interior doors tend to be flat paneled and much like Arts & Craft style doors, while exterior doors tend to be more arched and include such accents as windows or speakeasies. If you have a Mission style house, make sure the door is a darker hardwood in order to give it a distinct look against the bright pastels and whites of the house itself. Many Mission doors will also utilize ironwork, giving it a look of being crafted by hand and adding that extra touch of class. Especially with front doors, these doors are made to accent the home, not detract, and are typically made out of hardwood.

Typically simple yet original, purchasing a Mission door for your home may be a little more extensive than just going to your nearest hardware store since it is such a specific style - especially for exterior doors. Thankfully, the Internet has made shopping for just the right door easy, and a quick search will find plenty of companies that sell them. As with any other Internet purchase, however, be sure to research the company before buying, asking for feedback from other customers as well as return policies. Buying online also gives you the ability to custom make the door for that extra bit of originality. However, that means you will be responsible for installing them, although instructions are usually fairly simple to follow.

Mission style doors have a simple elegance to them, and are designed to add to the overall Spanish feel of the house. Give your house the romance of the Southwest style.

Installing And Replacing Doors

Hanging a door can be a frustrating process the first time or two. Taking time to check for plumb/square/level throughout the project will prevent frustration and achieve good results.

fiberglass exterior doors

Removing an existing door

EXTERIOR DOORS

Take the door off the hinges or tracks.

Remove the door casing (trim) on both sides.

With a reciprocating saw or mini-hacksaw, cut through nails holding the jambs.

If the door has a threshold plate, pry or cut it loose.

Framing a rough opening

On exterior and load-bearing walls you'll be removing a few existing wall studs that support the house. Therefore, the door's rough opening framing must take over the load.

In most cases, 2x4 or 2x6 lumber is used for side framing and two 2x10s (or larger) lumber makes up the header. Mark the outline of the doorway- 6" wider and 3" higher to accommodate framing. Make sure to remove any baseboard in the way.

Saw or chisel away the existing wallboard/plaster. Cut the existing wall studs in the new opening where the top of the framing header will be, or remove them completely if the header reaches the wall's top plate.

Remove the soleplate at the threshold. A reciprocating saw or hand saw is handy for this job. Cut two 2x4s (or 2x6) king studs to run the full length of the wall, or use an existing wall stud if possible.

Scab on trimmer studs to the king studs to support the header. Cut and fit the header on the trimmer studs and toenail the header to the king studs.

Installing door jambs

If you're putting in a prehung door, fitting the door into the jambs is already done for you. You just need to shim the jambs correctly into the frame. Whether you're installing each jamb separately, or installing a pre-hung door, getting the jambs in place is done basically the same way.

Shim the side jambs plumb/square with the opening and tack them in place. Test fit the header jamb and when it's square secure the side jambs.

NOTE: Place shims behind hinge and strike plate areas for secure fastening-especially exterior or locking doors.

Check for squareness again, shim if needed, and nail the header jamb in place.

Fitting the door

These are the extra steps needed if you don't have a prehung door. Compare the squareness of the jamb frame to the door. If it's not square or you're putting on an old door, it may be necessary to trim the door to fit.

TIP: Consider installing the door knob if it isn't already. It can help you control the door while test fitting and handling. (For more on that, check out our Door Knob Tips.)

When the door and the jamb frame are square to each other, adjust the gaps between the door and jambs-usually 1/16" at top, 1/8" on the knob side and up to 1/4" on the bottom. If installing carpet later, include that in bottom clearance.

Fit the door, block it with shims and check the gaps-plane the door if needed. When the door fits correctly, you're ready to mark the hinges.

Hanging a hinged door

Most doors have three hinges. A heavy or extra secure door may require more hinges. In this instance, we'll install the hinges to the jamb before fastening the hinges to the door. But some people screw them to the door first.

Mark and mortise the jamb hinges-usually 7" from the top of the upper hinge to the top of the door, and 11" from the bottom of the lower hinge to the bottom of the door. Center the middle hinge.

Locate the hinges to stick out slightly from the jamb so they won't "pinch" when opening/closing.Fasten the hinges to the jamb. Then fit the door and trace around the door hinge pieces (hinge leaf). Mortise out the door and fasten the hinges.

TIP: Don't completely tighten the screws to allow the hinges some "play" while getting the hinge pins in.

Tap the door pins in and test the door. If it opens/closes freely, you're ready to put on the door stop and latch hardware.

Shimming hinges

A newly hung door may bind or sag a bit, due to a jamb being out of plumb. Or accidentally making the hinge mortise too deep creates an uneven gap along the latch side of the door.

Both of these problems may easily be corrected by shimming a hinge or two with a cut piece of cardboard, thin flooring scrap, or in some cases a shim cut out to fit behind of the hinge.

Close the door and check the gaps. If the door sticks at the top hinge, shim the top hinge and snug the bottom hinge, and vise versa for a door sticking at the bottom hinge.

If the door sticks at the top knob-side corner, tighten the top hinge and shim the bottom hinge, and vise versa for a door sticking at the bottom knob-side corner.

Remove the hinge across from the gap you wish to close. Place the shim in the mortise and reattach the hinge over it. Note how much the door gap changed and shim other hinges accordingly if necessary. However, shimming out too thick will often make the shim visible.

Door knob tips

Do not try to install a door knob without an appropriately-sized hole saw. Go buy one-and a good quality chisel for mortising.

Most knobs and latch kits have instructions and a handy template to use, so we won't discuss actual installation here. In most cases, the knob and latch are located 3' from the bottom of the door.

With the knob on, locate the strike plate location by transposing the knob location measurements. A less conventional method is to "color" the knob latch point with pencil lead, turn the knob to retract the latch, position the door shut, and release the knob to mark the edge of the strike plate on the side jamb.

Paint Or Siding Replacement on Your Home

Is it time to replace your siding or repaint your home in the Seattle area? The weather in Seattle is tough on the exterior of your home because of all the rain we get her in the Pacific Northwest. The need to repaint a home in Seattle can lead to the decision to replace the siding if the wood on your home is buckling, rotting or cupping. If the paint and wood siding is so damaged that the cost to prep and repaint your home will be more than 00 you should consider re-siding.

masonite drawing board

The advantages of installing a new fiber cement exterior is that you get the best return on your investment over all other repairs on your home. If the exterior of your home is showing major wear replacement with Hardieplank Fiber cement siding ranks as one of the top fixes in our area for return on investment for your home. This is especially true if it has damaged wood siding or faulty LP siding. Did you know products like Hardy plank are by far the most cost effective, durable material to use when residing your home in the Seattle area. You increase the resale value of your home by weatherproofing your home and decreasing the future maintenance needs. We do a ton of siding replacement in Seattle particularly because of the wet weather and installation of LP siding, Weyerhaeuser siding and masonite siding. These products and or installation failures have resulted in water infiltration and class action lawsuits against those companies. Large numbers of track homes with failing siding gives homeowners in the pacific northwest a cost advantage over many other areas in the country. The reason for this is that all the siding replacement has created a healthy market for siding replacement contractors and made prices very completive. Do you have problems with your LP siding, Weyerhaeuser or masonite siding.

MASONITE

I give people estimates on residing their homes all day. I see many quotes for prepping and painting a home that are more money than re-siding the home with brand new Hardieplank. I am amazed at what it costs to strip and prep a home for painting. Often the cost to only paint your home is more money than tearing off your old siding, replacing the siding with fibrecement and painting the new boards. The end result is a brand new looking home! When you look at the total cost only painting will make your home look better for now but there will be considerably more maintenance in the future.

Siding replacement cost varies from home to home but you should budget about .00 a square foot for tear off, replacement of your siding and painting. This should include new home wrap and disposal of all waste material and new corner trim. This means that a typical home that is 2500 square feet will cost approximately,000 - ,000 to install new Hardie plank siding and look brand new.

If your siding and paint is in really bad shape your repair and painting estimates could be more than 00. Shop around and get 3 estimates to find out if you should repaint or replace your siding. Father's Day Photo Gift Ideas

With Father's Day fast approaching (June 19th in case you weren't sure) many are trying to find the perfect gift for dad. The requirements for the perfect gift usually include making sure the gift is unique and special, but not too expensive. One type of gift that meets these two requirements is a photo gift. If you've never considered buying your father a photo gift before, then this may seem like a great idea or you may be unsure. Either way, this article will give you useful information about photo gifts for Father's Day, from which photos to choose to different photo gift ideas.

masonite sheets

The first step is to decide which photo (or photos depending on the gift you choose) that you want to use. You will want to choose photos that are sentimental, will make him reminisce, and most importantly make him smile! Some ideas for photos include: photos of grandchildren, graduation, newborns, anniversaries, holidays, family portraits, etc.

MASONITE

Once you have several photos to choose from you will need to choose the perfect gift.

Unless you are a professional photographer, chances are you don't know much about mounted photo prints. They are a great way to display photos and are essential if you are making a large print to hang on the wall. Blowing up a photo for dad and mounting it makes a great Father's Day gift that he can display and enjoy forever. Any professional photo printer will have different mounting options to choose from. Popular mounting options include: solid black artboard, easel back, black core gatorfoam board, and masonite.

Canvases make amazing photo gifts as well. Especially canvases made using real photo paper and hand mounted to canvas. If you choose a canvas print, make sure to order it on Metallic Photo Paper to make it even more breathtaking. A colorful photo is particularly stunning on a metallic canvas. If you choose to give your father a canvas print for Father's Day, it will be a special gift that he cherishes forever.

Both photo prints on mounts and canvases come in a variety of sizes from 8x8 to 30x40. These are the two best ways to display large versions of a special photo that will really make an impact on your dad. However, the following are other gifts that he would also enjoy.

A photo in a frame may seem like a less than exciting gift to give your father for Father's Day. However, there are many frames that are one of a kind ways to display a photo on a desk or coffee table. For example, Desktop Swivel Frames are contemporary with black and metal borders. You can put a photo on either side and the frame swivels so that you can easily see the photo on the other side. Magnetic Floating Frames also have photos on either side of the frame that you can easily turn with the touch of your hand. The black frame is suspended between the bottom and top of the base by magnets. This frame is very sophisticated and makes a great accessory in a home or office.

Photo books are a great gift for dad if you have chosen multiple photos. Photo books come in a variety of sizes from small 2x3 books to larger 10x12 photo books. You can also choose from more casual books to books with photos mounted on rigid, solid black pages. Don't underestimate the sentimental value a photo book will have to your father.

Other photo gifts for Father's Day include mousepads and mugs. Mousepads with changeable photos are ideal because you can give your father several photos to insert under the cover of the mousepad. Stainless Steel Travel Mugs make great Father's Day gifts. You can put one or three photos on the outside of the mug and choose between a mug with a handle or one without.

No matter which photo gift you choose, your father is sure to appreciate your thoughtfulness in picking a gift that you uniquely created for him.

Metal Platform Beds - the Contemporary Alternative

Metal platform beds are quickly becoming a nice alternative for people wanting the function of a bed with a platform foundation for their mattress but one that gives a more modern contemporary industrial look. In this article we'll take a look at the construction of metal beds and how they can also offer you the same look and function of their wood bed counterparts.

masonite bifold doors

Wood platform beds have almost become the norm in platform bed circles and these vary greatly from the type of lumber used, hardware, designs and finish offerings. From import woods like rubber wood to more domestic ones like oak and maple you'll see quite a selection in these beds. Wood platform beds can blend well with many home decors but sometimes wood furniture isn't always the best solution for spaces that need something more. Many designers are starting to find that metal platform beds can solve many of the design issues presented by natural wood products which typically introduce varying wood patterns and color variances which can make it tough to design with against other wood furniture.

MASONITE

Metal platform beds are most often made from steel. One such company called Amisco specifically uses North American cold rolled steel in it's products. With steel a powder coat finish can be applied over the top of the steel in a uniform fashion that makes the finish one that's solid color without the variances you'd find in real wood products. Although quite beautiful, the variances in color and texture in wood products can make it tough when designing with other types of furniture. Because metal finishes are more uniform in color and can be made in a wide assortment of colors it makes it easier to introduce other pieces that can blend or compliment with existing or new furniture.

The foundations of metal platform beds vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. The manufacturer we mentioned previously in this article uses a system of steel crossbars that go width wise across the bed and connect down to the side rails using nylon clips that are secured with steel screws. Masonite paneling is installed over the top of these steel crossbars to creates a solid foundation. Other manufacturers may use a steel rack system that incorporates beech wood or other types of wood slats over the steel frame work. This can be compared to wood beds as most wood platform beds use some sort of wood slat system that goes over the bed rails.

The look of metal beds stays consistent with smooth un-textured surfaces. Many metal platform beds are constructed from 2 or 3 inch steel tubing which allows for bending and creating interesting and unique designs that can't be achieved in wood. Scrolling designs and unique bends as well as fascinating shapes can be creating from the bending of steel and when applied into the designs of metal platform bed headboards and footboards the result is uniquely stylish and appealing.

Metal platform beds offer a well built foundation. With the smooth features of steel they can have a color applied that is consistent and uniform allowing for many different combinations of colors. They also offer unique and stylish designs because of the bending of the metal that is now possible with today's technologies creating designs that were never before available in home bedroom decor. These many possibilities with metal frames makes them a great alternative to wood platform beds and perhaps gives them an edge when it comes to modern, contemporary styled furniture. If you're looking for a bed frame with these features than metal platform beds may be the bed for you.

Exterior Architectural Aluminum Entry Doors & Custom Storefronts Add to Your Business' 'Curb Appeal'

Doors are more than just entrance ways to your business; they are invitations to shop.

exterior doors for home

There are certainly some things in life that we all take for granted. No matter how necessary, we still underestimate the value and need for many of the things that we use daily, often until we are forced to think about them by some situation or circumstance.

EXTERIOR DOORS

For example, I am sure we all would put shelter at the top of our list of necessities of life, along with food and clothing. Shelter is initially defined simply as a "roof over your head" and gradually more and more components of that shelter become increasingly important as our hierarchy of needs evolve (similar to Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory dated back to 1943). Wikipedia defines shelter as a "typically basic structure or building that covers or provides protection". And, we all know that this so-called 'structure or building' has an interior and and exterior.

As with a business, both a physical and a virtual (online) business, this interior and exterior must not just be functional (a means to store, protect, and display a product), but should also be used to its fullest, such as, to draw customers in and attract their attention to the items or services on display for sale, and to make feel like they must go inside to buy that item.

The exterior of a business has a countless number of design possibilities, yet will always consist of at least one entrance way, let's face it, you have to get inside somehow! What the doorway area looks like is an important part of the 'curb appeal' of your business. This appeal is created through the design, the quality, and the upkeep needed to maintain the desired look.

Here are some things to consider when making decisions about the front entrance to, and the overall curb appeal of, your business. Remember that first impressions do matter.

Things to Consider

Shelter starts with protection from the elements, but goes on to include safety and security, too. Safety and security applies to your business at all times, i.e., before, during, and after work hours During the business day, you want your customers to feel safe in the neighborhood that your business is situated in, as well as inside your store (e.g., safe from crime, injury, fire, etc.). After hours you want to safeguard your business, inventory, paperwork and reputation with a good security system. ADT has an online questionnaire that can give you an idea of what to consider for your security needs based on some basic criteria, i.e., size of business; number of employees; number of doors; and type of ceiling. Their solutions cover a broad range of security issues, including: burglary; employee productivity; employee theft; vendor theft; robbery / assault; vandalism; worker's comp; slip and fall liability; drugs in the workplace; shoplifting; workplace violence / harassment; perishable spoilage; flood detection; outside safety; and intellectual property loss. Note: Keep in mind that it is important to have a solid Internet Security System in place for your online business as well.   Get a strong door so a wolf can not come and threaten to 'huff and puff and blow your door down'. Just like the story of "The Three Little Pigs" consider what kind of door is appropriate for your needs, yet still easy enough to maintain. Know how durable the door and its components (lock, hinges, etc) need to be (heavy or light traffic area)? How concerned are you about things like: break-ins; vandalism; or extreme weather or natural disasters? Typical materials for business doors include: steel, aluminum, and wood. When looking for a steel or aluminum door manufacturer, be aware of the further distinction there among: industrial, residential, and commercial and institutional markets.  Know what type of maintenance your Entry Door requires. For your curb appeal to be effective, not only do you need a solid and appealing door design, but you need to keep it looking neat and clean, too. How often do you need to clean or polish your door (especially glass or shiny areas)? How often do you need to paint or re-finish the surfaces? Will it hold up to heavy traffic? Is it weather-resistant? Is it energy efficient or insulated enough? Will it hold up to use or abuse, regarding scratches or dents? Keep a clean appearance both inside and outside of your store, including the doorway. A sloppily maintained facility will overshadow and negatively impact the best of products. First impressions matter.   Choose a custom-made front entry door / storefront instead of a standard manufactured door. Even if you are working with a limited budget, it may still be worthwhile to invest in custom-made entry ways, rather than going with generics, especially if you invest in materials and a design that is expected to hold up well over time. Consider consulting with an expert or specialist in the type of door you are considering. A company like Steiner Doors, who specializes in custom architectural aluminum door and window designs, has the experience to recommend an appropriate style for your business and can even incorporate your logo and/or street address into the front entry door's design. These doors can be made to architects' specifications with styles ranging from French Doors, to Herculite Doors, to Custom Aluminum Front Entry Doors (that do not have an industrial look), to Architectural Doors (with styles from the 30's and 40's, a great fit for some cities), to Custom Retail Aluminum Storefronts.   Your physical location is an asset, use it wisely. Especially if you have chosen to establish your business in a big town or big city, both for the fancy address, but also for the 'foot traffic', be sure that you do not squander that investment by not using your facility as the promotional opportunity that it can be. Use your facility to sponsor free or invitation-only after-hour events, such as: an Open House; a gallery exhibit; a frequent customer 'Meet and Greet'; a new product line debut; a media invitational; etc. When choosing this option, have some finger food or hors d'oeuvres on hand, and also some promotional products imprinted with your logo and business contact information. Whether it is for an exclusive after-hours audience or as a contest for regular day-time customers, invest in a quality promotional products such as: promotional apparel & caps; promotional bags & totes; pens; key chains; etc.    Learn key door terminology so that you know what to ask for. It seems like every single object in the world has an industry or association devoted to it. For doors, that holds true. Within this door industry, there is also important terminology to be familiar with. Some door manufacturer's and door industry group's that list glossaries or key terminology lists & FAQs on their websites include: Lowe's; Peachtree; and the Window & Door Manufacturers Association.  Tips & Tactics

Choose a door that is inviting or intriguing, To get an idea of how different impressions can be given by doors, think of how some "doors" have been portrayed in TV and film, such as how doors were depicted in Pixar's Monsters, Inc. animated movie, where children feared what was behind their bedroom doors; or in Alice in Wonderland when Alice was trying to find the right door to get out; or the door in the Twilight Zone introduction that you 'unlock with the key of imagination'. Windows are an element of your entrance way design that should be both decorative and functional. Depending on the size of your entrance way, whether it is a single or double door, or it is part of an entire store front including display windows, there are many options for your design. For example, think about whether or not your design might consist of: a solid metal or wood door; or just a metal frame around glass panels; or instead all glass with an imbedded or imprinted design; or a blend of metal structure with glass components within the design. The combinations and design possibilities are endless. If you are investing in a custom-made entrance way, choose a design that is timeless and one that you expect will remain relevant as your business grows. Keep in mind, too, that should you want to incorporate your logo (and/or perhaps also a building address number) within your door or physical store front area, that the design of that logo should be simple and of an appropriate size that it is legible to those that pass by, and that it is doable by the manufacturer. A metal cutout design probably can not incorporate an as elaborate or highly intricate design or color scheme as easily or as legibly as perhaps an imprinted version might be able to accomplish. Relevant industry groups and publications include: Door & Window Magazine, International Door Association (IDA), Window & Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA), National Fenstration Rating Council (NFRC), and Door & Window Manufacturer (DWM) Magazine.

Installing a New Storm Door

Many homeowners are looking for ways to increase their home's energy efficiency. A great way to conserve energy and make your home more efficient is by installing replacement doors and windows that have been optimized for maximum insulation and will significantly reduce energy costs. Installing a new storm door is usually the most cost effective and easiest way of beginning to modernize your home.

exterior doors for sale

Replacing a storm door is easy, if you follow the correct procedure. Begin by measuring the size of your old storm door and the size of the entrance. You certainly won't want to purchase a door that is too large or too small for your entryway. Double-check the measurements of the flange that connects the door to the house. Measure both the height and the width of the entrance, or the height and width of the door you are replacing.

EXTERIOR DOORS

Bring these measurements to the store where you are purchasing your new replacement door and make sure the new door fits these measurements exactly. If the measurements are not standard, you may have to custom order the door and wait for it to be manufactured to your specifications. Ask the store associates any questions you may have about energy efficiency, noise reduction and strength. Purchase a door that fits into your budget and has the highest degree of energy efficiency and insulation. Of course, you'll want to buy a door that fits into the décor of your home, too.

When you are ready to install the new storm door, thoroughly clean the area where the door attaches to the frame of the house. Remove old caulk and debris to provide a clean, smooth surface for the new doorframe and flange to rest. Be sure to remove and replace any rotting or decaying wood, and also paint any areas that need a touch-up before attaching your new storm door.

Make sure you keep the new door hardware close by and in a secure place where you are least likely to lose them. You might have as many as 30 screws for attaching the door to the house, as well as a spring or chain that keeps the door from slamming open and shut.

Slide the door into the opening and again check to see if the measurements are correct. It should fit securely on all four sides, but make sure the bottom of the door will not drag across the threshold. Use a level to make sure the door is hung properly and will be able to open correctly. You'll probably need another set of hands to hold the door until a few of the screws can be drilled. It is best to begin by screwing the top corners of the door and work your way down. Do not over-tighten the screws because this may dent the flange and make the door appear uneven.

Once the door is installed, attach all other hardware to the door. Fasten the spring, chain or automatic closer to the door and jamb. You also may need to attach the doorknob and locks. Apply caulk around the exterior of the flanges to make a tight seal with the house. Finally, clean up your mess and the job is complete.

A new replacement storm door can increase your home's energy efficiency and provide an updated appearance to your décor.

Inspecting Your New Home

So you finally got the call that you've been waiting for several months to receive. You're new home is finally complete. Over the past year, you've gone through the motions of building a custom home. You selected a floor plan, options, upgrades and made customizations. At the same time, you dealt with banks, mortgage and insurance companies, all of which collected money from you but gave you nothing in return, yet. Now, after all the chaos, you're builder is ready to hand over the keys to you so you can move and start enjoying you hard work.

masonite

Before you do, take time to thoroughly inspect the property. Building a custom home can be overwhelming experience. Take time before moving in to make sure everything is up to par. Having mistakes, flaws and forgotten options fixed after moving in is much more difficult. Here are some common things to look out for:

MASONITE

Options - Take a copy of your contract and walk through the house making sure that all the options, colors and styles you chose ended up being installed. This sounds like an obvious thing but these mistakes can sometimes go months without being noticed.

Electrical outlets - Test every electrical outlet and switch in the house. Go from outlet to outlet and make sure all are working correctly. Don't assume that, just because one outlet in a room is working, that all outlets are working. This will take about 30 minutes in most homes.

Plumbing - First, check that each sink in the house gets both hot and cold water. Then, make sure the toilets flush correctly. You'll also want to run the showers in each bathroom to make sure that the drains operate correctly.

Flooring- Make sure the flooring in your home has been installed correctly. Here's how you do it:
Tile - Gently tap each piece of floor tile in the house with a broom handle. If it sounds hollow, ask the builder to replace the tile. Even though the tile may not look out of place now, it will break or popup within a few months. Carpeting - Take off your shoes and walk around the carpet in the each room of your house. As you walk, check to make sure that the carpet runs flush up against the wall. In areas where the carpeting touches tile or other flooring, walk along the edge. If it feels like thorns are under your feel, it usually means that you're felling the small nails used to install the carpet. There's an easy fix for this that your builder can do for you.

Most homeowners don't notice many of the imperfections in their new home until moving in. This usually happens because they don't do a thorough job inspecting, or are put under pressure during the final inspection. The best way to inspect a home is to use it as you would when you move in. Here's what you do.

First, sit on the toilet in each bathroom and look around. You'll probably spend a fair amount of time in this position so make sure you like what you see. Are the counter tops in the bathroom level? Does the tile on the floor and in the shower look even? Does everything else appear to be in order?

Follow this same logic and apply it to each room in the house. Think about how you will use each room and pretend to do so. Go into the dining room and sit in a chair. Again, look around the room and make sure everything looks in place. Go to the kitchen and open every cabinet door and drawer. Make sure the refrigerator door opens all the way, etc.

The advantage to doing a thorough inspection of your new home before moving in is that you can have the builder fix everything first. Once furniture, moving boxes and kids are in the house, small repairs can become a big deal. Save the stress and get everything right before you move in.

House Siding

There are many types of house siding that could be used for new homes and remodeled homes.

masonite hardboard

One of which is wood siding. Wood siding is the common type used in most homes since it is the cheapest and readily available product. It has long life span and uses different types of wood materials. Top woods use for wood siding are pine, fir and various other materials. Popular today are cedar shingles or rougher looking shakes which gives warmth and class in a house.

MASONITE

Another popular type of siding is vinyl siding. Vinyl siding's shape come from the traditional wooden siding style. Most of this type of siding looks like clapboard or ship-lap. It can also be installed to get a cedar shingles look.

Although not really considered a type of house siding, bricks are not structural and look good and homey with the earth and chimney feel.
Free exterior coverings could be achieved by using combination of half brick and half vinyl siding.

Benefits of various materials

Good thing about using wood siding is its aesthetic however it requires high maintenance of staining or painting every few years.

Being trouble free, cheap and long life span are the reasons why vinyl became a popular choice for house owners looking for best siding type. Also, vinyl could be installed by the homeowners themselves as it does not require specialized knowledge on how installation is done. Strong points of bricks are it last forever and won't break like vinyl. It also cost less when it comes to installation.

Reasons to replace or repair siding

After many years, older siding need to be repaired or replaced completely with new product. It is recommended to use brick if the location of the house is near a golf course or areas that have frequent impact. Bricks are also a good choice in areas with high snow drifts or much rain. For those aiming to spend less money and inclined to high maintenance, vinyl is the best siding type. People who want to achieve a traditional charm and homey image, wood siding is the answer.

There are many house siding options to choose from when it comes to siding. Just remember to pick the best option as it will play a very important roll in the appearance and security of a home.

Windows, Doors, and Skylights - Energy-Saving Exteriors For a More Efficient Home

Saving home energy does not begin and end with improving the heating and cooling system inside your house, nor does it all depend on the energy consumption of the appliances you most likely use all the time. There are many ways to be cleaner and greener at home. That includes what you do to the outside of your house, which is what all the unwanted heat and cold comes in contact with first.

wood exterior doors

Energy-saving exteriors, therefore, are essential if you want to save home energy. They are the first line of defense meant to fight off unwanted temperatures from leaking inside and increasing the load on your heating and cooling system. Installing energy-efficient doors, windows, and skylights greatly reduce the energy costs in any house. Here is what you need to learn about these types of energy-saving exteriors.

EXTERIOR DOORS

Doors

It is not surprising to know that newer exterior door models were designed to be more energy-efficient. The most common of these energy-savers are those made with a fiberglass or steel skin with a core made of polyurethane foam insulation. These doors are highly efficient in trapping out the heat during the summer and absorbing it in the winter, as evidenced by their high R-values. The R-values are the rates to which the doors can resist the flow of thermal energy. Glass doors are less effective, though, because glass is not a very good insulator. There are, however, models that have a thermal break installed on their metal frames. The more expensive (and usually more energy-efficient) glass doors are made with multiple panes or spectral selectivity features.

These newer doors are good investments if you want to replace your existing door, but if the old one is still in good condition and it pains you to take it down, you can install a storm door to increase insulation. Storm doors are often made of fiberglass, steel, or wood and, just like other new models, have foam insulation inside.

Windows

These energy-saving exteriors can also become hidden atrocities on your electricity bill if you do not know how to choose the right window materials, install them, and properly maintain them. If your goal is ultimately to save home energy, with little to zero consideration on the immediate effects on your bank account, then your best move is to replace all your old single-pane windows with new ones that have double or triple the number of panes and have low-emissivity coatings. Such a big word there, but it only means that the newer windows were designed to reflect more heat away from the house and absorb less. If you live in the Sun Belt areas, the mere act of replacing your old windows can save you up to 15 percent of your home's cooling requirements during the scorching hot summers in your state.

However, if your budget cannot live up to the costs of new, high-performance windows, an alternative that is almost as effective is to install storm windows. They are cheaper, yet they can cut down heat loss through windows by up to 50%. A good storm window must have strong weatherstripping properly installed at all its joints.

Skylights

Skylights are one of the most attractive energy-saving exteriors. Not only do they illuminate natural lighting from above, they also affect the temperature levels in the space below. As a rule, the size of the skylight should not be more than 15% of the total size of the room if it has few windows, and not more than 5% if the room has a lot of them. South-facing skylights are the best option if you want to save home energy for passive heating during the winter, but it can also pose a problem when it gains unwanted heat in the summer. If you place the skylight under a shady tree, however, or add a movable cover, this problem can quickly be resolved.

Exterior Bamboo Blinds Helps Keep Out The Sun

Yes now you too can ward off evil with your exterior bamboo blinds. Actually, culture is rich with the uses of many natural growing woods and plants being used around the house. The reasons behind these items being used around the house have changed significantly from ancient times. The Japanese culture used to use exterior bamboo blinds to ward off evil spirits. If you were to study the Chinese culture, you would find that bamboo means long life and in the India culture it means friendship. While in today's world, we may see exterior bamboo blinds as a way to ward off the evil sunrays washing out the television or creating unwanted heat, they have had their purposes in the ancient cultures.

door sweeps for exterior doors

For instance, in Asia, huts were made of bamboo and grass; even the window coverings were bamboo. The use of bamboo in Asia was to keep out inclement weather. So yes, our world has changed to where we find bamboo a signature of the tropical worlds such as Japan and Asia and we find we want to create that atmosphere in our backyard.

EXTERIOR DOORS

Exterior bamboo blinds are great for your backyard, not only because they offer you more shade on your porch and are the envy of friends for decorating your home in a new fashion, but because they hold up during any type of weather. The bamboo does need to be treated for weather resistance every year, and you will want to switch the side that is exposed to the sun every once in a while, but you will be protected.

You will be able to have those indoor barbeques on your porch during a rainstorm and be protected. The bamboo treatment allows for the reduction of mildew not only on the blinds, but also in the area you are protecting.

Not only can you switch, which side is exposed to the sun whenever you need to, but also the installation of these blinds is extremely easy. You do not have to hire a contractor to help you. The instructions are very easy to follow and you just need an electrical screwdriver.

There are two styles of exterior bamboo blinds, the venation and the roll up. The roll up bamboo blind is easier to deal with because you simply roll it up and secure it to the straps on the ceiling. The venation works off the rope system typical of most mini blinds so they tend to get tangled.

Avoiding Rug Damage in the Home Office

So, you are setting up a home office and you want to protect your area rug or carpet from the desk chair that will be constantly rolling back and forth. That is a very good idea. Chair rollers can do significant damage to your rug or carpet backing, causing the latex bond to break down prematurely and within a relatively short period of time you will experience buckling, wrinkling or worse; You could end up with a whole in your expensive flooring that starts out small but soon grows in size proportional to the amount of chair rolling that has taken place. So to protect your investment, you decide to buy a plastic or rubber chair mat to put on top of that expensive rug or carpet. This seems to be a logical and economical solution, but if your house is built on a concrete foundation, you could be asking for more trouble than you anticipated.

masonite doors

Even though you are protecting the surface of your rug, you may begin to see some other problems begin to surface. You may begin to notice water droplets under a clear plastic mat. This is only a sign of the damage to come. Even though it is not evident, most concrete slabs can have moisture or alkali in the soil beneath that wicks up into the concrete over time. Most of the time we never know this is the case because air and gases can pass through carpets, pads and rugs. Therefore any moisture that creeps up through the slab is able to dry quickly and does not experience any appreciable damage until you put something on the floor that does not allow the air to pass through and dry out quickly. That something would be a plastic or rubber mat or runner. The plastic does not breathe, and in fact it causes condensation (by a type of solarization) (the plastic or rubber actually draws moisture or alkali up through the slab more quickly). Sometimes you don't even notice a problem until the damage has already been done. This type of damage can happen under the mat or runner and you will not even notice anything until it is time to remove or replace it. There have been many occasions in my career, where during the removal of a plastic mat, the carpet just falls to pieces and the smell of mildew wafts through the air as you try to lift it off the floor. Or a client will call me to consult about a hump under their rug or carpet that was not there when it was installed. Upon investigation it is almost always a mound of alkali that has eaten its way through the concrete slab, coming to rest as a mound of fine white powder under the rug. This alkali not only damages the rug but can also wreak havoc in your concrete slab, leaving craters or sunken ridges in the actual concrete after the alkali has been vacuumed away.

MASONITE

This leaves us with the question: How do I protect my rugs against rolling chair damage? ((or even excess traffic damage)? Many people often like to use plastic or rubber runners in high traffic areas to protect their rugs). If you need to protect your rug and your house is built on a concrete slab, always use something that breathes (allows air and gases to dissipate). One of the best products for rolling desk chairs is a masonite (or any densely packed particle or veneer) desk mat. These are made of compressed wood and will allow your chair to roll easily across the floor without causing damage to your rugs and carpets. You could also kill two birds with one stone, by building a platform for your office area and cover it with whatever materials you desire (hardwood or laminate looks great). This way you can add to your home decor by defining the space that is used as your home office. Just make it large enough for the desk and chair to reside upon. This also allows for portability. If you decide to change your office area, you simply have to move your platform to a new location and "Bob's your uncle". This also allows you to play with the shape of the platform. You could have a round, square or kidney shape office space. If a platform is outside your ability or budget, you may also use area rugs made of natural materials that are densely and tightly packed. These can also do the trick just fine. If your house is built on a concrete slab, stay away from mats, runners or even rugs that are made of plastic or rubber, or have a solid rubber or latex backing on them. These will only bring you heartache and eat away at your flooring investments.

What if my house has a wood floor? If your house was built up off the ground with wood floors being the part that you walk on, you are relatively safe to use plastic or rubber mats. But if your house is an older home with hardwood floors already in place, why in the world do you have carpet, get rid of that carpet and pad and have your hardwood floors refinished. It will add great value to your home. But you may be using an area rug in the spot where your desk and rolling chair reside. If this is the case you would most often be safe in using any type of mat (unless you suspect any type of moisture or leaks under the wood flooring). If you have any doubts about moisture problems, it is easy to test for moisture in any type of sub-floor. Simply take a piece of plastic wrap, at least six inches square, and duct tape it (all around the edges) to the concrete or wood sub-floor in all suspected areas. If there is any moisture problem you will begin to see droplets of water forming under the plastic wrap within two to three days (or sooner).

Any Desert Rat worth his salt knows how to use solarization to produce condensation. It can be your best friend if you are lost in the desert without water, as long as you have a piece of plastic. You just dig a small hole in the ground, drape the plastic over the hole so that it droops in the middle and have some kind of container underneath to catch the condensed liquid so that you can have some water to drink. However, this same process, is an enemy to your floors and should be avoided if you want to keep your flooring in good shape. Let your floors breathe and they will give you many years of quality service.

Proper Installation of an Exterior Door

IF you have never installed a door before, you really need to do your homework. Exterior doors need to be installed with near perfection or the results can be harmful to the framing around the door.

exterior doors with glass

While curb appeal is great, it isn't the main task of the door. Sealing the inside from outside air, rain and snow is really the function of entry doors. If done improperly you will have air and water leakage into the house and possible even rotting of the framing surrounding the door.

EXTERIOR DOORS

When installing a door, the first step is to check the floor for level. Having a level sill is one of the most important steps. If the sill is not level it will be nearly impossible to get the door square with the jamb.

Preparing the sill is second on the importance list. With the introduction of sill guards and sill tapes, this step has gotten easier. Cover the floor where the door sits on the floor with one of these products that will keep out and shed water to the outside. There are many on the market, just pick one that fits your installation best. Don't just settle with caulking the floor and setting the door. Caulking breaks down over time and you will be left with a vulnerable point of water entry.

Cut the house wrap at the top of the door on small 45 degree angle. Tape it up out of the way so it is just above the exterior of the door. Caulk the perimeter of the rough opening and set the door. Slide drip cap under the house wrap. Caulk and tape the angle cuts to keep water from penetrating there.

One of the places that usually gets overlooked are where the jamb meets the sill. Be sure to caulk this area, water runs down the door jamb and collects at the sill. Caulking here will increase the life of the jambs. Another area to caulk is where the exterior brickmoulding meets the jamb. This will also add to the energy efficiency of the door.

Don't shy away from this DIY project, as it is not as scary as you think. Just be prepared, do your research and your new door will look great and function properly for years to come.

Screen Door Project

I'm going to tell you how you can construct an inexpensive screen door with looks equal to a 0 screen door. This article is based on experience and it will guide you through each step.

exterior doors with glass

The Background:

EXTERIOR DOORS

My wife recently asked me to go buy a screen door to fit on the door leading into our back yard. We have four dogs that love to be outdoors but we found that they were constantly going in and out of the back yard, treading dirt through our living room! Also we were getting lots of flies, moths etc coming in if we left the door open.

The Requirement:

I knew I needed a timber framed screen door to match the feel of our house exterior, I also needed it to look good and have a strong mesh to withstand the battering our dogs would impose upon it.

The Materials:

1/ I found a 32" wide natural wood screen door with black mesh and a reinforced lower half (perfect for dogs) I got mine from Home Depot and it was less than .

2/ I then bought two stylish black metal door handles and a set of three 1/2" wide hinges.

3/ To finish the door I bought a satin finish red exterior paint and grey primer.

4/ I bought an inexpensive screen door spring closer with two hook screws to ensure the door automatically closes after opening. Approx

The materials total came to approx , all that was left to do now was assemble and hang the screen door.

I noticed that the vinyl finished aluminum screen doors cost anything up to 0 and did not look aesthetically good at all.

The Assembly:

1/ First step was to unscrew the border holding the mesh screens in place and paint the bare wooden frame. I gave the door a single coat of the grey primer and two coats of the red exterior paint. It was already looking great!

2/ Before refitting the mesh screens I measured out three equidistant points along the spine of the door and chiseled out the sections where the hinges would be placed. This was easily achieved with a 1/2" wide sharp chisel. I cut the hinge holes about 1/8" deep which was just enough to allow the door to sit flush with the timber frame currently surrounding the back door to our house.

3/ I fitted the hinges (making sure they hinged the correct way!) and replaced the two sections of mesh before screwing down the mesh frames.

4/ The two black handles were fitted front and back ensuring that they were slight staggered vertically to avoid screwing into the opposite side handles fix points.

5/ I hung the door in place and tested that the door opened and closed freely. It is a good idea to mark out with a pencil where the hinge holes meet the existing door frame and then pre-drill these with a drill bit just smaller than the hinge screw diameter. Then simply line up the hinges with the holes and screw them into place.

6/ I fitted the screen door spring closer with one hook screw in the door frame and the other in the surrounding timber frame.

The Results:

FINISHED - The whole project cost about and took me about 4 hours to finish. We now have a beautiful screen door which lets our dogs out, but not back in, and keeps all the nasty bugs in the yard where they belong! The door looks great and our neighbors have all asked where to get one!

Installing Concrete Sidewalks at Your New Home

Concrete sidewalks can vary in shapes, colors and be formed into any shape you can imagine. Before starting on this project, look around at other homes and businesses to see what can be done but don't be limited by what you see. Use your imagination. Colored concrete is available today from most Redi-mix suppliers and concrete color stains are also another way to obtain a beautiful finished product. There are "cast-on" products out there that can provide a non-slip surface, a super hard surface and even anti-spalling compounds that help keep the sidewalk from chipping due to the use of winter salt. Most redi-mix concrete dries in some shade of beige color depending on the color if the sand and Portland cement used. Ask your supplier where he has poured his product and go look at it. This will give you an idea of what the "aged" product will look like later. Once you have decided what color concrete you are going to use, decide what strength concrete you need. I recommend the use of 3000# strength concrete for all sidewalks except very heavy use or vehicle traffic. If vehicles will be crossing the sidewalk, use 4000# or 5000#. It will cost a few dollars more a yard, but will last a great deal longer.

masonite hardboard

TOOLS REQUIRED-

MASONITE

Hammer, sledge, string line, and level with tripod. 4' hand level, pointed and flat shovels, wood 2x4 for screeding (leveling) of the concrete, bolt cutters, safety glasses, work gloves, fine broom and two edger's called sidewalk edger's and v-groove styles. A metal sidewalk edge finishing tool, a V-groove tool for center joints and a steel trowel are a must. Most masons prefer to use a magnesium float to put the initial finish on their walks prior to applying the final broom finish.

MATERIALS REQUIRED-

Concrete is ordered by the cubic yard. It is quite simple to figure out how many yards you need for your project using the following formula: Length x Width x Height (thickness) divided by 27 =? Cubic yards. A typical example: Your sidewalk is 3' wide, 3-0 feet long by 4" thick. Using the formula above: 3' x 30'x.33 /27=1.1 cubic yards. You cannot order.1 cubic yards. So it is either 1 or 1.5 yards. All Redi-mix companies charge what they call a short load charge for anything under 6 yards. So there are choices here to be made. Is there anything else that needs concrete? Make the walk a little wider? Add a patio area? Ask the Redi-mix company what the charge is for 1.5 or 2 yards. The price may be the same anyway. While we here, I want to spend a minute discussing getting the concrete to your site. Trucks are heavy. Very heavy. If your sidewalk or patio is in the rear yard, either the truck has to be able to get to it or you will have to wheel it in wheelbarrows. Wheeling 1 yard is not bad, wheeling 5 or 6 yards is a brute. You will need plenty of help and good wheelbarrows. Redi-mix companies also charge extra for any time spent over 1 hour on site. IF you decide to take the truck into the rear yard, be prepared for lawn damage. Concrete companies are not responsible for damage to your property if you direct them to drive over the lawn. Worse yet is if they pass over the septic system, buried pipes, etc. and damage them. BE SURE there is nothing underneath that can de damaged. Don't guess!

A Redi-Mix truck can weigh over 40,000 pounds! It will leave a lasting impression on your lawn and can damage lightweight asphalt driveways. Be careful where you send it.

You will need some misc. mixed lumber to form your concrete walk. 2x4's in long lengths work best. If you have a curve in the walk, it is best formed using strips of non-tempered masonite or 1/4" plywood. Whatever you use, it does not have to be pretty. It is going to be removed after the pour. Buy a bundle of 1"x2" or 1"x3" for stakes. These can be cut into 1 foot lengths and points cut on them. You will also need a couple of pounds of 8 penny common nails.

LAYOUT-

The easiest way to layout a new sidewalk is to use your garden hose. Simply lay the hose out on the ground where you want the walk to go. Forms do not have to be made of wood. Things such as brick, wood edging, pre-formed plastic edging are all used and produce many different edge finishes. If you use these types of things, just take extra care not to splash concrete on them. Concrete stains or discolors very easily and does not wash off well. When everything dries, the concrete you think you washed off, leaves a permanent stain. Another very helpful item available today for homeowner use is upside down paint at most hardware or box stores and comes in a variety of colors. This makes it very easy to spray a layout line for digging or removing sod or soil. DO NOT spray your hose unless you want it to be that color for a very long time. A few carefully placed spots that you connect after removing the hose is fine.

Make sure that you mark out the lines a few inches wider than the finished walk width. You need to get your 2 x4's and stakes inside the excavation and in most cases flush with the surrounding ground. If you are going to expose the edges of the new walk above ground, you will also have to finish the edges when you pour.

GROUND PREPARATION-

Never, never place concrete on frozen ground or mud. You need a firm foundation base for the new walk. You must remove the concrete thickness of earth plus the stone you will be placing underneath. A 4" walk usually gets 4" of stone base or good clean run-of bank sand and gravel. After removing the 8" of earth, place your sub-base material and tamp into place. Make it slightly wider than you walk width. Your forms will sit on top of the base. NOTE: Now is the time to run any yard lighting wires or conduits under the walk before you pour. Even if the lighting is in the future, you will be glad you make preparations now. Place a piece of 1" PVC conduit with caps under the walk for future use.

FORM WORK-

OK, we are using wood forms for this walk. Layout your 2x4's along the walk and drop stakes every few feet. Your 2x4s will be installed end to end so a stake is required at each joint. Starting on one side, install your 2x4's using enough stakes to firmly hold them in place. They must be straight and plumb. Nail the 2x4"s to each stake but DO NOT drive the heads all the way in. You have to remove these stakes later and it is a lot easier to get a hold of the nail head if it sticking out a little. If you have curves in your walk and are using 1/4" material to form you will of course have to use many more stakes. Just make sure the form is not going to move when you place the concrete against it.

Now cut a piece of scrap 1x2 the width of your walk. (3' in this case). Using this as a guide, install the opposite side of your formwork. It will save you having to measure over and over again and speeds up the work.

CONCRETE PLACING-

Ok, now we are ready to go. Check your list. Forms are all nailed? Not raining? Plenty of help? Got all the tools you need?

And most important did you order the concrete? Most companies require at least two days notice for homeowners to order. Commercial accounts come first due to their large volume of orders. BE READY! Remember the truck clock starts when he gets there, not when you start pouring. Using your garden hose, if the ground is very dry, slightly dampen it. This will help prevent premature drying of the concrete by the ground sucking the water out of the concrete before you get finished. Starting at the end the farthest from the truck (you will see why later) start placing the concrete in the forms. One person must, using his trowel, push the concrete into place and do a preliminary leveling within the forms. After placing a few feet of concrete, using a 2x4 as a screed, he can then level the entire width of the walk by sliding the 2x4 back forth over the top of the forms. You need one person leveling concrete with shovel, 2nd person using 2x4 as a screed to level concrete flush with the tops of forms and an extra third hand to wheel concrete, handle the chute, etc.

If a low spot in the concrete develops, just use the trowel to pickup some wet concrete and toss it in. Move back and re-screed over that area. If too much concrete develops in front of the screed just push or pull it into the area without concrete. You will soon get the hang of it. The people helping can watch as they pour the concrete from their wheelbarrows to be sure they don't overwhelm you. If you work slow and steady it goes pretty fast. OK, we now have the entire form filled with concrete. Place a little bit extra in one wheelbarrow and let the truck go. Now you need somewhere for the truck to wash out his chutes and you need to wash your tools and wheelbarrows. Concrete stains and gets HARD! Put it somewhere that can be easily cleaned later. Do not leave piles of concrete that cannot be moved.

FINISHING-

You get a few minutes break here. Have your favorite beverage and relax a little. The concrete will take a little while to start to setup but keep an eye on it. Touch it with your finger just like a cake. If it feels somewhat solid, now is the time to put the preliminary edge on it. Using the edger with a rolled lip, run it along the entire outside edges of your walk way. This will form a smooth sealed edge. You will have to pickup the edger many times and re-start. Just backup a few inches and moving ahead to remove the lip left when you picked the edger up. This will take some time so don't let the concrete "get away" (harden) on you. Once you have done an area, a 2nd person can start placing the v-grooves every 4 or 5 feet (less if you like the look). Using the edger, simply push the edger across the width of the walkway with enough pressure that both sides of the edger sit firmly on the concrete. This will leave a neat v-groove in the walk. You will get the hang of this very quickly. Don't worry for now about the little lip of concrete left on each side of the new groove and edges you made. Now using your broom, very lightly draw it across the width of the walk way being careful not to draw it across the v-grooves but do some very close to them and the edge of the walk. Read that sentence again. You can ruin the whole appearance of the walk if you mess this up. Be gentle but firm enough to leave broom lines in the concrete and wipe away the little lips of concrete you left behind when edging. The broom lines can be as heavy or as light as you like. This will leave a non-slip surface. Always broom across the path of the traffic, never with it. The trick here is to not to let the concrete harden before you are done. Start with a SMALL project and work your way up. After your first pour, you will know some of the tricks and better able to judge how fast concrete sets up.

Keep some plastic or tarps handy just in case you get a surprise downpour. You can quickly throw plastic over the pour and save it. If the rain washes out the top layer of concrete, the walk will be ruined.

It is very strongly suggested that you do not leave a smooth or hard trowel finish on any outside walk. It will become very slippery when wet. A broom finished side walk is what you normally see. There are colored aggregates that can be scattered over a walk to add color and a non-slip surface at the same time.

OTHER FINISHES-

Stamping-There are available metal stamping tools that can be used to place an imprint in wet concrete to simulate stone, pavers, brick, etc. These can produce a dramatic effect from plain concrete but take some experience to use.

COLORING-
You may be able to buy pre-colored concrete from your supplier. It is expensive but can come in many different colors. It is produced from regular wet concrete with a powder added to the mix while still in the truck. Pour the entire area in one pour. Just a slight change in the amount of powder or water or sand in each truck can produce a different shade of concrete. This will show when dry. The powder is measured in ounces with a postal scale. It is that exacting. Concrete suppliers have color charts for concrete but this needs to be ordered well ahead of time as they do not stock all colors.

EXPOSED AGGREGATE-

This is a really tricky method of finishing concrete. You purchase your concrete specifying the use of round washed river rock 3/4" or smaller. If you visit the concrete supplier, you can see what color the gravel he has available. Most river rock is beige/brown in various shades. It is not an exact science though and there will be some variation from week to week of what you can get. I have on occasion for a very large project, ordered enough stone to supply the total amount of yards required for the work. The supplier will of course want payment as he will have to wait to supply it as you need it, but it is one way to control final color and costs. Placement of the concrete is the same as any other side walk however the finishing is much different. After edging your walk, using your trowel you must place a flat finish on the walkway and let it sit. At just the right time, using your garden hose and spray nozzle, you literally wash off the top of the concrete removing the cement and leaving the stones beneath exposed. It is tricky but leaves a gorgeous finish. Too much water or pressure and you undermine the stones, too little and the concrete won't wash off enough to leave the stones exposed. The trick here is wash to before it gets too hard. You might well want to try process on a small test sample during a different pour. Washing lets the color of the stones show through. Do not try to finish after washing; you will smear the final finish

CLEANUP-

Always clean up your tools and yourself as soon as possible after the pour. Concrete can cause serious burns to the skin due to the lye in the concrete and many people are quite allergic to it. Always wear eye protection when pouring concrete. No matter how careful you are placing the concrete, it splashes everywhere. A small drop in your eye can cause serious pain and permanent eye injury. Place covers on anything you do not want concrete to get upon. Shrubs, flowers, lawns, etc. should be protected.

Enjoy your new sidewalk. You saved a ton of money doing it yourself.
