I am a firm believer that what makes a house stand out is the architectural detail that goes in the planning you do for your doors and your molding.French doors are a very beautiful thing to add to your house plans. Not only do they add beauty they are very good for letting the proper light into your home. French doors will both open up and let plenty of a breeze in on a cool summer night. This style of door is a little bit more expensive than regular doors because they both operate but are well worth the investment.

Interior french doors are especially good for the entrance to your office, den or a library. I like this style of doors because they open up a room. When you can openly see through not only does it create a since of openness it makes the area seem larger. You can take a small room and make it appear larger. French doors look good because they both operate. French door are different from double doors because with double doors only one door opens and the other stays stationary.This is why I like french doors better. If you want to add some color you can add a curtain to the glass part of the french door and pull it together in the middle. I would suggest if you are building a new house to use french door in place of double doors or sliding doors anywhere you can.

If they are eight feet tall six inch crown molding is a good size. If you have above eight foot ceilings you will want to go a little larger in accordance to how tall your ceilings are. If the crown trim is not big enough it will look out of place. Crown molding is a little on the expensive side so you may want to consider installing it yourself. Installing New Siding? Find Out Why Old Siding Must Be Removed Completely

Why is it important to remove the old siding completely before you install a new siding on the exterior walls of your house? The temptation to simply fit the new siding on top of the old is always very high. If you have gone in for wooden siding, you can easily drill nails into the same and install the new aluminum or metal siding on the surface without any difficulty.

Yet, this is only going to complicate matters. Installing new siding over old siding is no different than wearing new clothes over your old clothes and hoping that you look good. The damage that the old siding will cause to your interior wall will be unimaginable.

Secondly, as the siding gets damaged, it becomes a breeding ground for craters, pests and rodents. By simply focusing on the exteriors and the aesthetics and not focusing on the functionality aspect, you will end up with severe damage to the wall. Another significant disadvantage of going in for this approach is that you do not get the opportunity to repair the insulation of your house. The siding is often installed to provide a gap between the outer wall where insulation can be pumped in.

If you do not remove the old siding, you would not be in a position to find out whether the installation is working properly or not. More often than not, insulation settles down and ends up creating air pockets which allow the energy efficiency of the house to come down drastically.

The only possible argument that works in favor of not removing the siding is the difficulty involved in the task. Yet, if you have a few ladders, one or two persons to help you and the right tools, you can remove the entire siding in a span of a single day. If you do not have anybody to help you out, you just have to put in a bit more time.

However, the removal of the siding gives you an opportunity to assess the condition of your house. Remember, when you go in for new siding, you probably would not be tinkering with the insulation or the condition of the wall for the next decade or so.

Installing Interior Doors

Interior doors, which are sometimes know as "passage doors" since they connect passages between rooms, come in a variety of styles, and unlike exterior doors, do not have the same security needs. After you have chosen your interior door style, you will need to install your door. If you're not much of a handyman (or woman), the idea of installing a new door inside your home may sound somewhat intimidating. However, with the proper tools, it is a task that can be easily accomplished, even for a novice. Here's what you will need to hang an interior door in your home:

· Level
· Shims
· Wood putty
· A friend to help

EXTERIOR DOORS

These are the basic tools and supplies you'll need in order to properly install the door. Once you have everything together, it should only take you a couple hours to finish the project, assuming you don't run into any unforeseen problems.

The first step in the process is to fit the door into the rough frame. When fitting the door into the frame, it's good to have an extra set of hands to help hold the door in place and to ensure that it doesn't twist or move while you're finishing the installation. Use shims in order to vertically plumb the door and to fill in any gaps along the top and sides. Tap all the shims into place from both directions, then nail through them and the door jamb into the wall studs using 8-penny finishing nails and starting at the top hinge. Be sure that all the nails go completely through the shims and jamb and into the wall stud. Repeat this step on all other hinges. Be mindful that the space between the door and the jamb should be even all the way around the door at this point.

Now you need to trim the shims, being careful not to cut the jamb or the wall. Once this is done, cut the door's trim and nail it on every 16 inches using 4-penny finishing nails. Use wood putty to cover the nail heads. All that's left now is installing the doorknob and doing any touch up work with the wood putty.

Those are the basics of installing an interior door. With a little time, patience, and the proper equipment, you can save yourself some money in installation fees by hanging your door yourself.

Installing And Replacing Doors

Hanging a door can be a frustrating process the first time or two. Taking time to check for plumb/square/level throughout the project will prevent frustration and achieve good results.

Take the door off the hinges or tracks.

Remove the door casing (trim) on both sides.

With a reciprocating saw or mini-hacksaw, cut through nails holding the jambs.

If the door has a threshold plate, pry or cut it loose.

Framing a rough opening

On exterior and load-bearing walls you'll be removing a few existing wall studs that support the house. Therefore, the door's rough opening framing must take over the load.

In most cases, 2x4 or 2x6 lumber is used for side framing and two 2x10s (or larger) lumber makes up the header. Mark the outline of the doorway- 6" wider and 3" higher to accommodate framing. Make sure to remove any baseboard in the way.

Saw or chisel away the existing wallboard/plaster. Cut the existing wall studs in the new opening where the top of the framing header will be, or remove them completely if the header reaches the wall's top plate.

Remove the soleplate at the threshold. A reciprocating saw or hand saw is handy for this job. Cut two 2x4s (or 2x6) king studs to run the full length of the wall, or use an existing wall stud if possible.

Scab on trimmer studs to the king studs to support the header. Cut and fit the header on the trimmer studs and toenail the header to the king studs.

Installing door jambs

If you're putting in a prehung door, fitting the door into the jambs is already done for you. You just need to shim the jambs correctly into the frame. Whether you're installing each jamb separately, or installing a pre-hung door, getting the jambs in place is done basically the same way.

Shim the side jambs plumb/square with the opening and tack them in place. Test fit the header jamb and when it's square secure the side jambs.

NOTE: Place shims behind hinge and strike plate areas for secure fastening-especially exterior or locking doors.

Check for squareness again, shim if needed, and nail the header jamb in place.

Fitting the door

These are the extra steps needed if you don't have a prehung door. Compare the squareness of the jamb frame to the door. If it's not square or you're putting on an old door, it may be necessary to trim the door to fit.

TIP: Consider installing the door knob if it isn't already. It can help you control the door while test fitting and handling. (For more on that, check out our Door Knob Tips.)

When the door and the jamb frame are square to each other, adjust the gaps between the door and jambs-usually 1/16" at top, 1/8" on the knob side and up to 1/4" on the bottom. If installing carpet later, include that in bottom clearance.

Fit the door, block it with shims and check the gaps-plane the door if needed. When the door fits correctly, you're ready to mark the hinges.

Hanging a hinged door

Most doors have three hinges. A heavy or extra secure door may require more hinges. In this instance, we'll install the hinges to the jamb before fastening the hinges to the door. But some people screw them to the door first.

Mark and mortise the jamb hinges-usually 7" from the top of the upper hinge to the top of the door, and 11" from the bottom of the lower hinge to the bottom of the door. Center the middle hinge.

Locate the hinges to stick out slightly from the jamb so they won't "pinch" when opening/closing.Fasten the hinges to the jamb. Then fit the door and trace around the door hinge pieces (hinge leaf). Mortise out the door and fasten the hinges.

TIP: Don't completely tighten the screws to allow the hinges some "play" while getting the hinge pins in.

Tap the door pins in and test the door. If it opens/closes freely, you're ready to put on the door stop and latch hardware.

Shimming hinges

A newly hung door may bind or sag a bit, due to a jamb being out of plumb. Or accidentally making the hinge mortise too deep creates an uneven gap along the latch side of the door.

Both of these problems may easily be corrected by shimming a hinge or two with a cut piece of cardboard, thin flooring scrap, or in some cases a shim cut out to fit behind of the hinge.

Close the door and check the gaps. If the door sticks at the top hinge, shim the top hinge and snug the bottom hinge, and vise versa for a door sticking at the bottom hinge.

If the door sticks at the top knob-side corner, tighten the top hinge and shim the bottom hinge, and vise versa for a door sticking at the bottom knob-side corner.

Remove the hinge across from the gap you wish to close. Place the shim in the mortise and reattach the hinge over it. Note how much the door gap changed and shim other hinges accordingly if necessary. However, shimming out too thick will often make the shim visible.

Door knob tips

Do not try to install a door knob without an appropriately-sized hole saw. Go buy one-and a good quality chisel for mortising.

Most knobs and latch kits have instructions and a handy template to use, so we won't discuss actual installation here. In most cases, the knob and latch are located 3' from the bottom of the door.

With the knob on, locate the strike plate location by transposing the knob location measurements. A less conventional method is to "color" the knob latch point with pencil lead, turn the knob to retract the latch, position the door shut, and release the knob to mark the edge of the strike plate on the side jamb.

Installing a New Storm Door

Many homeowners are looking for ways to increase their home's energy efficiency. A great way to conserve energy and make your home more efficient is by installing replacement doors and windows that have been optimized for maximum insulation and will significantly reduce energy costs. Installing a new storm door is usually the most cost effective and easiest way of beginning to modernize your home.

Replacing a storm door is easy, if you follow the correct procedure. Begin by measuring the size of your old storm door and the size of the entrance. You certainly won't want to purchase a door that is too large or too small for your entryway. Double-check the measurements of the flange that connects the door to the house. Measure both the height and the width of the entrance, or the height and width of the door you are replacing.

Bring these measurements to the store where you are purchasing your new replacement door and make sure the new door fits these measurements exactly. If the measurements are not standard, you may have to custom order the door and wait for it to be manufactured to your specifications. Remove old caulk and debris to provide a clean, smooth surface for the new doorframe and flange to rest. Be sure to remove and replace any rotting or decaying wood, and also paint any areas that need a touch-up before attaching your new storm door.

Make sure you keep the new door hardware close by and in a secure place where you are least likely to lose them. You might have as many as 30 screws for attaching the door to the house, as well as a spring or chain that keeps the door from slamming open and shut.

Slide the door into the opening and again check to see if the measurements are correct. It should fit securely on all four sides, but make sure the bottom of the door will not drag across the threshold. Use a level to make sure the door is hung properly and will be able to open correctly. You'll probably need another set of hands to hold the door until a few of the screws can be drilled. It is best to begin by screwing the top corners of the door and work your way down. Do not over-tighten the screws because this may dent the flange and make the door appear uneven.

Once the door is installed, attach all other hardware to the door. Fasten the spring, chain or automatic closer to the door and jamb. You also may need to attach the doorknob and locks. Apply caulk around the exterior of the flanges to make a tight seal with the house. Finally, clean up your mess and the job is complete.

Installing Concrete Sidewalks at Your New Home

Concrete sidewalks can vary in shapes, colors and be formed into any shape you can imagine. Before starting on this project, look around at other homes and businesses to see what can be done but don't be limited by what you see. Use your imagination. Colored concrete is available today from most Redi-mix suppliers and concrete color stains are also another way to obtain a beautiful finished product. There are "cast-on" products out there that can provide a non-slip surface, a super hard surface and even anti-spalling compounds that help keep the sidewalk from chipping due to the use of winter salt. Most redi-mix concrete dries in some shade of beige color depending on the color if the sand and Portland cement used. Ask your supplier where he has poured his product and go look at it. This will give you an idea of what the "aged" product will look like later. Once you have decided what color concrete you are going to use, decide what strength concrete you need. I recommend the use of 3000# strength concrete for all sidewalks except very heavy use or vehicle traffic. If vehicles will be crossing the sidewalk, use 4000# or 5000#. It will cost a few dollars more a yard, but will last a great deal longer.

TOOLS REQUIRED-

Hammer, sledge, string line, and level with tripod. 4' hand level, pointed and flat shovels, wood 2x4 for screeding (leveling) of the concrete, bolt cutters, safety glasses, work gloves, fine broom and two edger's called sidewalk edger's and v-groove styles. A metal sidewalk edge finishing tool, a V-groove tool for center joints and a steel trowel are a must. Most masons prefer to use a magnesium float to put the initial finish on their walks prior to applying the final broom finish.

MATERIALS REQUIRED-

Concrete is ordered by the cubic yard. It is quite simple to figure out how many yards you need for your project using the following formula: Length x Width x Height (thickness) divided by 27 =? Cubic yards. A typical example: Your sidewalk is 3' wide, 3-0 feet long by 4" thick. Using the formula above: 3' x 30'x.33 /27=1.1 cubic yards. You cannot order.1 cubic yards. So it is either 1 or 1.5 yards. All Redi-mix companies charge what they call a short load charge for anything under 6 yards. So there are choices here to be made. Is there anything else that needs concrete? Make the walk a little wider? Add a patio area? Ask the Redi-mix company what the charge is for 1.5 or 2 yards. The price may be the same anyway. While we here, I want to spend a minute discussing getting the concrete to your site. Trucks are heavy. Very heavy. If your sidewalk or patio is in the rear yard, either the truck has to be able to get to it or you will have to wheel it in wheelbarrows. Wheeling 1 yard is not bad, wheeling 5 or 6 yards is a brute. You will need plenty of help and good wheelbarrows. Redi-mix companies also charge extra for any time spent over 1 hour on site. IF you decide to take the truck into the rear yard, be prepared for lawn damage. Concrete companies are not responsible for damage to your property if you direct them to drive over the lawn. Worse yet is if they pass over the septic system, buried pipes, etc. and damage them. BE SURE there is nothing underneath that can de damaged. Don't guess!

A Redi-Mix truck can weigh over 40,000 pounds! It will leave a lasting impression on your lawn and can damage lightweight asphalt driveways. Be careful where you send it.

You will need some misc. mixed lumber to form your concrete walk. 2x4's in long lengths work best. If you have a curve in the walk, it is best formed using strips of non-tempered masonite or 1/4" plywood. Whatever you use, it does not have to be pretty. It is going to be removed after the pour. Buy a bundle of 1"x2" or 1"x3" for stakes. These can be cut into 1 foot lengths and points cut on them. You will also need a couple of pounds of 8 penny common nails.

LAYOUT-

The easiest way to layout a new sidewalk is to use your garden hose. Simply lay the hose out on the ground where you want the walk to go. Forms do not have to be made of wood. Things such as brick, wood edging, pre-formed plastic edging are all used and produce many different edge finishes. If you use these types of things, just take extra care not to splash concrete on them. Concrete stains or discolors very easily and does not wash off well. When everything dries, the concrete you think you washed off, leaves a permanent stain. Another very helpful item available today for homeowner use is upside down paint at most hardware or box stores and comes in a variety of colors. This makes it very easy to spray a layout line for digging or removing sod or soil. DO NOT spray your hose unless you want it to be that color for a very long time. A few carefully placed spots that you connect after removing the hose is fine.

Make sure that you mark out the lines a few inches wider than the finished walk width. You need to get your 2 x4's and stakes inside the excavation and in most cases flush with the surrounding ground. If you are going to expose the edges of the new walk above ground, you will also have to finish the edges when you pour.

GROUND PREPARATION-

Never, never place concrete on frozen ground or mud. You need a firm foundation base for the new walk. You must remove the concrete thickness of earth plus the stone you will be placing underneath. A 4" walk usually gets 4" of stone base or good clean run-of bank sand and gravel. After removing the 8" of earth, place your sub-base material and tamp into place. Make it slightly wider than you walk width. Your forms will sit on top of the base. NOTE: Now is the time to run any yard lighting wires or conduits under the walk before you pour. Even if the lighting is in the future, you will be glad you make preparations now. Place a piece of 1" PVC conduit with caps under the walk for future use.

FORM WORK-

OK, we are using wood forms for this walk. Layout your 2x4's along the walk and drop stakes every few feet. Your 2x4s will be installed end to end so a stake is required at each joint. Starting on one side, install your 2x4's using enough stakes to firmly hold them in place. They must be straight and plumb. Nail the 2x4"s to each stake but DO NOT drive the heads all the way in. You have to remove these stakes later and it is a lot easier to get a hold of the nail head if it sticking out a little. If you have curves in your walk and are using 1/4" material to form you will of course have to use many more stakes. Just make sure the form is not going to move when you place the concrete against it.

Now cut a piece of scrap 1x2 the width of your walk. (3' in this case). Using this as a guide, install the opposite side of your formwork. It will save you having to measure over and over again and speeds up the work.

CONCRETE PLACING-

Ok, now we are ready to go. Check your list. Forms are all nailed? Not raining? Plenty of help? Got all the tools you need?

And most important did you order the concrete? Most companies require at least two days notice for homeowners to order. Commercial accounts come first due to their large volume of orders. BE READY! Remember the truck clock starts when he gets there, not when you start pouring. Using your garden hose, if the ground is very dry, slightly dampen it. This will help prevent premature drying of the concrete by the ground sucking the water out of the concrete before you get finished. Starting at the end the farthest from the truck (you will see why later) start placing the concrete in the forms. One person must, using his trowel, push the concrete into place and do a preliminary leveling within the forms. After placing a few feet of concrete, using a 2x4 as a screed, he can then level the entire width of the walk by sliding the 2x4 back forth over the top of the forms. You need one person leveling concrete with shovel, 2nd person using 2x4 as a screed to level concrete flush with the tops of forms and an extra third hand to wheel concrete, handle the chute, etc.

If a low spot in the concrete develops, just use the trowel to pickup some wet concrete and toss it in. Move back and re-screed over that area. If too much concrete develops in front of the screed just push or pull it into the area without concrete. You will soon get the hang of it. The people helping can watch as they pour the concrete from their wheelbarrows to be sure they don't overwhelm you. If you work slow and steady it goes pretty fast. OK, we now have the entire form filled with concrete. Place a little bit extra in one wheelbarrow and let the truck go. Now you need somewhere for the truck to wash out his chutes and you need to wash your tools and wheelbarrows. Concrete stains and gets HARD! Put it somewhere that can be easily cleaned later. Do not leave piles of concrete that cannot be moved.

FINISHING-

You get a few minutes break here. Have your favorite beverage and relax a little. The concrete will take a little while to start to setup but keep an eye on it. Touch it with your finger just like a cake. If it feels somewhat solid, now is the time to put the preliminary edge on it. Using the edger with a rolled lip, run it along the entire outside edges of your walk way. This will form a smooth sealed edge. You will have to pickup the edger many times and re-start. Just backup a few inches and moving ahead to remove the lip left when you picked the edger up. This will take some time so don't let the concrete "get away" (harden) on you. Once you have done an area, a 2nd person can start placing the v-grooves every 4 or 5 feet (less if you like the look). Using the edger, simply push the edger across the width of the walkway with enough pressure that both sides of the edger sit firmly on the concrete. This will leave a neat v-groove in the walk. You will get the hang of this very quickly. Don't worry for now about the little lip of concrete left on each side of the new groove and edges you made. Now using your broom, very lightly draw it across the width of the walk way being careful not to draw it across the v-grooves but do some very close to them and the edge of the walk. Read that sentence again. You can ruin the whole appearance of the walk if you mess this up. Be gentle but firm enough to leave broom lines in the concrete and wipe away the little lips of concrete you left behind when edging. The broom lines can be as heavy or as light as you like. This will leave a non-slip surface. Always broom across the path of the traffic, never with it. The trick here is to not to let the concrete harden before you are done. Start with a SMALL project and work your way up. After your first pour, you will know some of the tricks and better able to judge how fast concrete sets up.

Keep some plastic or tarps handy just in case you get a surprise downpour. You can quickly throw plastic over the pour and save it. If the rain washes out the top layer of concrete, the walk will be ruined.

It is very strongly suggested that you do not leave a smooth or hard trowel finish on any outside walk. It will become very slippery when wet. A broom finished side walk is what you normally see. There are colored aggregates that can be scattered over a walk to add color and a non-slip surface at the same time.

OTHER FINISHES-

Stamping-There are available metal stamping tools that can be used to place an imprint in wet concrete to simulate stone, pavers, brick, etc. These can produce a dramatic effect from plain concrete but take some experience to use.

COLORING-
You may be able to buy pre-colored concrete from your supplier. It is expensive but can come in many different colors. It is produced from regular wet concrete with a powder added to the mix while still in the truck. Pour the entire area in one pour. Just a slight change in the amount of powder or water or sand in each truck can produce a different shade of concrete. This will show when dry. The powder is measured in ounces with a postal scale. It is that exacting. Concrete suppliers have color charts for concrete but this needs to be ordered well ahead of time as they do not stock all colors.

EXPOSED AGGREGATE-

This is a really tricky method of finishing concrete. You purchase your concrete specifying the use of round washed river rock 3/4" or smaller. If you visit the concrete supplier, you can see what color the gravel he has available. Most river rock is beige/brown in various shades. It is not an exact science though and there will be some variation from week to week of what you can get. I have on occasion for a very large project, ordered enough stone to supply the total amount of yards required for the work. The supplier will of course want payment as he will have to wait to supply it as you need it, but it is one way to control final color and costs. Placement of the concrete is the same as any other side walk however the finishing is much different. After edging your walk, using your trowel you must place a flat finish on the walkway and let it sit. At just the right time, using your garden hose and spray nozzle, you literally wash off the top of the concrete removing the cement and leaving the stones beneath exposed. It is tricky but leaves a gorgeous finish. Too much water or pressure and you undermine the stones, too little and the concrete won't wash off enough to leave the stones exposed. The trick here is wash to before it gets too hard. You might well want to try process on a small test sample during a different pour. Washing lets the color of the stones show through. Do not try to finish after washing; you will smear the final finish

CLEANUP-

Always clean up your tools and yourself as soon as possible after the pour. Concrete can cause serious burns to the skin due to the lye in the concrete and many people are quite allergic to it. Always wear eye protection when pouring concrete. No matter how careful you are placing the concrete, it splashes everywhere. A small drop in your eye can cause serious pain and permanent eye injury. Place covers on anything you do not want concrete to get upon. Shrubs, flowers, lawns, etc. should be protected.

Installing Vinyl Replacement Sliding Glass Doors

Last week I told you how to remove your old sliding glass door in preparation for the installation of the vinyl replacement door. Let's go through the installation procedure for both the Retrofit style and replacement style frames.

Let's start with the retrofit frame. Like the retrofit window, the door will have a 2" lip flush with the outside edge of the frame. The difference between the retrofit window frame and the retrofit door frame is the absence of the lip on the bottom of the door due to the sill track. Your door will have the lip on both sides and across the top. The majority of the installation process is the same whether it's a retrofit frame or replacement frame. The first thing you want to do is check the floor for a level condition. If the base is not level, add shims to create a level base. This step is very important, because if you have a sloping bottom, the whole frame will be thrown out of square. You will have problems locking the door as well as air infiltration trouble. So, put down shims to make the base level. If possible, use one long shim to create a solid base for the weight of the door. Before setting the door in place, put down a bead of liquid nails from end to end, set the shims on top of the liquid nails, and run a generous bead of caulk on the outside face of the opening, where the retrofit lip is going to contact the exterior surface. Caulk the sides and the top.

Now set the door in place, being careful to lift the door and set the bottom track on top of the shims, rather than dragging the bottom. Obviously, this requires two people, one on each side. You tilt the top away from the opening as you set the bottom in place. Then, raise the top until the retrofit lip contacts the exterior surface where you applied the caulk. The reason I use liquid nails on the bottom rather than caulk is because I don't like to put screws in the bottom, and the liquid nails product is as good as screws when it dries. Have your helper hold the frame in place while you go inside to plumb and secure the door. Put a level on the jamb where the slider will lock. Plumb the jamb and install shims where you put your screws. You should put one about 6 inches from the top and one 6 inches from the bottom. A good quality door will have long screws shipped with the door that are replacements for the small screws holding the locking hardware to the jamb. Be sure to shim where these screws install. Now, if you leveled the bottom and plumbed the side, your top and opposite side should automatically be square. Put shims on the opposite jamb, and drive in your installation screws. Put 3 to 4 screws in the jamb. Then, run your tape measure from the top right corner to the bottom left corner. Write down that measurement. Measure from the opposite corners, and the measurement should be the same if your frame is square. Finally, put one screw in the top center You really don't need any more than one. You don't need to use shims since there won't be any load or torque on the top header. Just don't overtighten the screw, otherwise the frame will bow.

At this point you should have the frame installed in the opening with the fixed panel already glazed in from the factory. Here is where you want to install the sliding panel. It goes in from inside the house. Set it on the side and spray a generous amount of lubricant to the steel rollers to help them spin freely. Wipe away excess before putting the panel in. Remember to raise the top into the header as far as it will go, then swing the bottom over the lip and set it down on the track. If the bottom won't get over the bottom lip, you will have to adjust the bottom rollers to bring them up into the frame. You should see a hole on the side rail to insert a screwdriver and turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise to bring the rollers up and out of the way. After you set the rollers on the track, be sure to adjust them back down before sliding the door. Have your helper lift the side up while you turn the adjustment screw clockwise. Do both sides, then slide the door closed and check for equal daylight from top to bottom. If there is more daylight showing on top or bottom, adjust the rollers to bring the door panel plumb with the jamb. Adjust the lock. Each door should come with lock adjustment instructions. Install the screen door on the outside. Now seal the crack between the retrofit lip and the exterior surface. Go inside and fill the space between the frame and wall studs with R-13 insulation. The last step is trimming the inside. We sell vinyl trim pieces that are designed to trim the inside without having to paint, stain, or nail. Now, the replacement frame installation process is the same, except there is no retrofit lip. Therefore, when you put the frame into the opening, you have to plumb the side jambs from two places rather than one. In addition to plumbing the jamb left to right in the opening, you also have to plumb inside to outside because you don't have the retrofit lip to keep your frame aligned with the outside wall. Also, you need to apply trim to the exterior as well as the interior. You can use a basic vinyl flat trim for the outside, and that is available on the shopping page as well. Be sure to caulk the outside trim where it meets the surrounding surface.You just installed a vinyl sliding glass door. Installing An Exterior Door

Installing an exterior door is one of the easiest of all door installations. Whether the door is installed in new construction or in a replacement situation, there are a few factors that make this an easy task.

The biggest reason this is a simple operation is that these doors come prehung. What this means is the door is already hung in its jamb. The hinges are mortised into the door and jamb and screwed in place. The door is held in position by the hinge pins, leaving the perfect reveal around the door and the jambs top and sides. The holes are also bored for the lockset and if necessary, for the deadbolt too. Exterior doors come in wood, fiberglass, and the most popular, steel. The two sizes are normally used for exterior doors are 32" and 36". With the sizes of todays furniture and appliances the smart choice is the 36" door. The standard height for a door is 6'8" but taller ones can be special ordered.

EXTERIOR DOORS

The exterior trim comes nailed to the jamb. This trim, called brickmoulding, is mitred and already installed, saving the installer(s) another step. These doors also have an aluminum threshold already attached to the legs of the jambs. All these things make the door and jamb one cohesive unit.

The standard jamb size is 4 and 1/2 inches wide. With the demand for a higher insulation R value in exterior walls, 2x6 framing is being used more frequently. Jambs to fit these walls, 6 1/2 inches, are becoming more common. Jamb widths can be made to order for whatever a projects needs are and would cost more.

To install an exterior door, first check to see if the rough opening is correct. The width of the opening should be 2" wider than the door itself (38" for a 36" door, 34" for a 32" door). For a rough opening height 83" will suffice for most door manufacturers. Also check to see if the framing and floor is reasonably plumb.

Door installation is easier with 2 people but can be done alone. Put the door in the opening from the outside. If you are working alone, tack the door to the wall through the brickmoulding, not driving the nails home. I like to use galvenized ring shank splitless nails that are used for cedar siding. They don't split the wood and the smaller heads are not as obvious to the eye. The ring shank feature gives them great holding power.

With the door tacked in the opening, go to the inside of the door and check the reveals around the door. There should be about an eighth of an inch all around the door. Shim the jambs of the door so the reveals are right. Check the door jamb on the hinge side for plumb. If it is not plumb, then the floor is out of level. One jamb leg or the other will need to be shimmed so the threshold is level. Now readjust the reveals by moving the door and jambs sideways in the opening to a point where the reveals are right. Once the door and jamb are in position, shim the jamb at each hinge and at the strike, top and bottom on the strike side. Nail the shims in place by nailing through the jamb, through the shims and into the framing. Check the door swing to see if it opens and closes properly. If all is well, go outside and nail through the brickmould using the splitless nails to nail the door frame to the house.

Most door manufacturers provide long screws that replace some of the shorter screws in the hinges on the jamb. The top hinge is the most important place to use one or two of these screws.
These screws go through the jamb and into the framing and keep the door from sagging over time.

Most doors come with an adjustable threshold. This may have to be adjusted up or down to create an airtight seal.

With the door securely in the opening, it is ready for door hardware installation.

Helpful Tips on Installing Prehung Fiberglass Entry Doors

The promise attached to a prehung door, that it is easy to install, is often misconstrued. The idea behind it is not that anyone at all can place the door but that the unit has been designed so that it can be installed with less effort or trouble by someone who knows how to do it, whether a professional installation service or a homeowner with the needed experience in carpentry. What poses a problem is that homeowners usually encounter prehung fiberglass entry doors while looking to make simple home improvements themselves, like getting a replacement front door. This is not uncommon since older front doors made from wood get beaten down by heat and frost, wind and rain, overuse. The thought of having to replace just one exterior door makes it seem like you can do it yourself.

You should have already decided that the door you want is fiberglass. More and more people are looking to replace wood doors with fiberglass doors, and get prehung fiberglass entry doors rather than complex door systems. No one wants to feel stressed out over a door! Fiberglass is a preferable surface material because it resists warping, splitting and rotting unlike wood, plus denting and corrosion unlike steel. It is also believed to be eight times stronger than vinyl and twice than steel. It lasts longer with hardly any need for repair and maintenance. Fiberglass doors can have a wood grain surface and stain finish resembling real wood. It does not conduct heat and insulates up to five times better than wood plus it allows natural light inside homes, thus it is energy-efficient.

You should check the usual problem areas prior to installation. In fact, it is not uncommon for D.I.Y. installers to mess up the job just because they did not care to read the manufacturer's instructions. Surprisingly typical oversights on this stage are having the wrong door size, hand or shims. The knob of a right-handed door is on the right, and that of a left-handed door is on the left. The door should be able to swing to the side where you will be standing to open and close it. Your purchase should have thin strips, called shims, for alignment, overhead or airspace, and resistance to premature wear.

You should go through every detail of the installation to determine whether you had better pay a professional or can do it yourself. The process is pretty straightforward with prehung fiberglass entry doors but requires little tricks that only experienced carpenters would know to do. They would make sure the rough opening is plumb, for example, and the floor underneath the sill is level. Imagine that you roll out a carpet and discover there is no space for it! Someone experienced would use a spacer board to give airspace for carpeting or check that the door jambs are touching a smoothly finished floor like ceramic tile, cork or hardwood. Doing a bad job with the installation will certainly cost you. Your door will rub, open by itself or close improperly if it has been placed incorrectly.

What You Need to Know Before Installing Interior Bifold Doors

Interior bifold doors are a practical and economical choice for closets in small spaces. There's a variety of finishes from which to choose, including wood veneer and glass doors.

Small areas such as a bedroom, entry or hallway usually don't have enough room for closets with swinging doors. That's where bifold doors are a practical alternative. Closest dimensions typically have openings of four, five or six feet. A bifold door is versatile as it has a right and a left section, which join in the center in an unfolding action. This allows for opening the door from either the right or left side.

The selection of bifold door styles are the same as with traditional swing doors, with the exception of the type of hardware needed. Bifold doors are available in the typical hollow core interior style, which makes them an economical and lightweight choice. Durable and easy to install, bifold doors don't have to be drab looking. Some hollow core styles include decorative features such as raised panels, which add a stylish touch. There is also a variety of wood veneers available such as mahogany, maple and oak.

Solid core bifold doors are another option. Although they cost more than hollow core doors, they can be a good investment if sound is an issue. The term "solid core" describes the core portion of the door, which is a solid piece typically comprised of manufactured or particleboard wood. Some solid core doors have a steel core. The veneer on solid core doors is similar to that on hollow core doors but more closely resembles the wood finish of swing solid wood doors. This makes it easy to match the style of existing swing doors in the home.

You may want to purchase casing or trim for the doors and consider adding a doorstop to your list. Casings, trim and doorstops are not included in the bifold door package. These can add extra cost to your project, but do provide a more professional and finished look. However, it's not necessary to have these extras, especially if cost is an issue.

There are other uses for these doors besides closets. They're very useful between rooms that don't have doors and transition into other areas, such as into a living room or kitchen. It's also easy to combine bifold doors, using two to make up one larger door.

It's not difficult to install a bifold door and only a small number of tools are needed. The most expensive tool you might use will be a screw gun or power drill, but a manual screwdriver is sufficient. Of course, if you plan to add trim, there will be a bit more work and time involved. Adding casing, trim or a doorstop is an extra step.

These doors come in louvered, solid or other combinations of styles, making them easy to match with your existing doors. There are many varieties from which to choose, and they can add elegance and beauty to any home at a reasonable cost.
