A slider is actually two doors that are hung from a track and bi-pass each other to open and close. The problem with this? You can only access one side of the closet at a time.
Sliders are great in areas that don't have room for swinging doors. In fact sliders don't take up any space in the room when opened. This is great in an area such as a door in a hallway, a swinging door when opened would make it difficult to pass by or even open. You will see sliders used in small laundry areas and mostly in bedroom closet doors.

Sliding doors have a track at the top, and rollers that attach to the top of the doors themselves.
Adjustment of the doors may be tricky and can take some time to get the clearances correct.
While this style of door does not protrude into the room, they do narrow the opening of the closet. Only one door may be opened at a time so you will lose access to one side of the closet.
An alternative to using sliders is to install double doors in their place. In bedrooms, this usually isn't a problem. Just be sure to know the layout of the room as you will need the full width of the door to open. The biggest advantage to double doors is they will need less adjustment and have less hardware to maintain. The only operating parts on a double swinging door are the hinges and the knob.
Double doors install much like a single swinging door. Once installed you should have years of trouble free operation. There is also a bracket system that simplifies the installation of pre-hung doors. This system allows even a first time door installer to get the job done correctly the first time.
